Broken Tooth

Enamel covers the outermost layer of teeth and is the hardest substance in the body. Nevertheless, teeth can break.

Causes of broken teeth

• An accident can directly cause damage to the teeth
• Teeth grinding can cause tooth wear
• Large fillings can weaken the teeth
• Chewing on something hard (candy, nuts)

Symptoms of a broken tooth

• Pain when chewing/eating
• Toothache if the nerve has been affected
• Increased sensitivity to heat, cold, and sugar
• Pain that comes and goes
• Swollen gum around a tooth

Treatment

Smoothing sharp edges: Small fractures can be treated by smoothing the sharp edges.

Filling: Most often the dentist will suggest placing a new filling.

Crown: Larger fractures are treated with a crown that covers the tooth.

Root canal: If the nerve is affected, the tooth must be root canal treated first.

Extraction: If the tooth cannot be saved, it should be extracted.

Broken tooth price

The price to repair a broken tooth with a filling costs between 1500-2300 NOK. Repairing with a crown costs approximately 6000 NOK.

If a broken tooth is not treated, bacteria can enter the nerve and cause an infection.
