Treatment of loose teeth in adults
Having a loose tooth at a young age is something everyone experiences. However, a loose tooth in adulthood is a sign that you should visit the dentist.
One of the most common causes of a loose tooth in adulthood is gum disease (inflammation of the gums). Gum disease is caused by the accumulation of bacteria on the teeth due to poor oral hygiene. The bacteria lead to an infection in the gums that over time weakens the attachment between the tooth and the gum.
Loose teeth are treated by removing the bacteria around the tooth. The dentist will perform a deep cleaning and remove plaque and tartar. If the teeth are very loose, the dentist may suggest splinting the teeth together. Sometimes it is difficult to save loose teeth, in which case extraction may be necessary.
Teeth grinding at night and during periods of high stress can also cause loose teeth over time.
