Treatment of dental abscess
A dental abscess is a collection of pus around a tooth and in the gums caused by bacteria.
Swollen gums around a tooth can be due to food debris that has accumulated. In other cases, swollen gums can be a sign of an abscess.
The bacteria usually come from the tooth due to cavities and spread to the gums and jawbone. This initially feels like the gum is swollen around a tooth. Over time, the swelling can increase in size and you may develop facial swelling that can spread to the cheek or jaw.
Gum disease is an inflammation of the gums caused by plaque and bacteria. Over time, without treatment, a dental abscess can develop in the gums.
A dental abscess will not go away on its own and can last for several years. It is not recommended to puncture a dental abscess at home as the infection can spread.
The dentist will assess your condition and prescribe antibiotics if needed. A dental abscess is treated by extracting or root canal treating the tooth. For severe pain, the dentist will drain the abscess on the first visit.
A dental abscess that is treated in good time usually does not cause any long-term problems. However, an untreated dental abscess can spread to other parts of the body and lead to potentially serious complications. It is recommended to see a dentist as soon as possible.
