Treatment of gum disease and periodontitis
Periodontitis (gum disease) is an infection that damages the gums and the bone surrounding the teeth.
Periodontitis occurs due to bacteria around the gums called plaque. Plaque accumulates on the teeth and in gum pockets. The body's immune system reacts to plaque with inflammation. Left untreated, inflammation will continue with an increased risk of tooth loss.
The early stage of gum disease is called gingivitis. Gingivitis is a mild inflammation of the gums that can be treated and is reversible. If left untreated, gingivitis can lead to permanent gum disease.
To get rid of gum disease, plaque and tartar must be removed by a dentist. Depending on the severity, multiple visits may be necessary. Helfo will cover treatment where medically necessary, with a co-payment between 600-800 NOK.
