Toothache

Emergency help for toothache and dental pain

Toothache most commonly occurs due to cavities. A broken tooth or filling can also cause severe pain. Sometimes, inflammation in the gums can cause intense pain that resembles a toothache.

Symptoms of toothache

Most people experience toothache as severe pain. The pain can be constant or come and go in periods. Food and drink can worsen the symptoms. The pain can be mild or sharp and is often noticed at night.

When should you visit a dentist?

If you have had pain for more than 1-2 days, you should visit the dentist to get it examined. The longer you wait, the higher the risk that the situation worsens and costs increase.

What will the dentist do?

The dentist will take X-rays and examine your teeth. You will receive the necessary information so you know what treatment options are available. Sometimes toothache is treated with antibiotics to control infection before further treatment. If further treatment is needed, the dentist will inform you and provide a cost estimate.

Toothache and headache

Untreated toothache can be linked to headaches. Most headaches and toothaches originate from a common nerve called the trigeminal nerve. The trigeminal nerve provides sensation to the face, lips, teeth, and gums. Because of this shared nerve, toothache and headache can occur simultaneously.

Toothache tips and advice

Toothache tips and advice

While waiting for your dentist appointment, you can try the following to reduce pain.

Rinse with salt water

Salt water works as a disinfectant and anti-inflammatory and helps loosen food particles and foreign objects stuck between teeth. Mix half a teaspoon of salt with a cup of lukewarm water and use as a mouth rinse.

Cold compress

Use a cold compress on the area where you have pain. A cold compress causes blood vessels to contract, thereby reducing pain. Cold temperature also helps reduce inflammation and swelling. A bag filled with ice cubes can be applied to the painful area for 20 minutes at a time.

Pain relief

For mild toothache, Paracetamol tablets can be tried. For extreme toothache, Naproxen or Ibuprofen tablets may help. The most important measure for acute tooth pain is to visit the dentist. We guarantee same-day emergency appointments and will help you get rid of your toothache.
