Treatment and removal of wisdom teeth
It is common to get wisdom teeth between the ages of 18-25, and they are usually discovered by the dentist on X-rays.
Wisdom teeth are the last teeth to erupt and there is often not enough space in the mouth. The lack of space can lead to tenderness and inflammation in the gums around the wisdom tooth. The pain feels like a toothache and can radiate up toward the temple causing headache or toward the jaw.
The Norwegian Dental Association recommends that symptom-free wisdom teeth should not be removed. However, wisdom teeth with symptoms should be removed, ideally between the ages of 18-30. Studies show better healing and less risk of complications at this age.
During removal, the dentist will use local anesthesia so you won't feel any pain. It is normal to feel some pressure during the procedure. At our Sandaker clinic, wisdom teeth are removed by a surgeon with extensive experience.
For surgical removal, Helfo will cover up to 30-40% of the cost. The co-payment will be approximately 2200-4500 NOK. A simple removal costs approximately 1200-1900 NOK.
It is normal to have pain for 48 hours after surgery. The jaw may feel sore for up to a week. Pain relievers such as ibuprofen and paracetamol can be used.
It is common to bleed after removal. Bite down on a compress for 20-30 minutes to stop the bleeding.
If you have swelling and pain after two days, fever, bad taste, or pus - contact the dentist.
Avoid hot food and drink for 24 hours. Eat soft food for the first 2-3 days.
The first choice is a combination of ibuprofen (400 mg) and paracetamol (1 g) up to four times a day.
